What is Solerni?
Solerni is a social network and MOOC platform that allows you to extend your knowledge and skills effectively and in a fun way online, through social learning and activities.
What is a collaborative learning social network?
A collaborative learning social network is a network of people that enables its members to add to their knowledge and skills through exchanges with the community.
How can I join the Solerni collaborative learning social network?
When you sign up to Solerni, you join all of the thematic learning communities proposed by the platform and you can join all of the provided MOOCs.
Is registration for Solerni free?
Yes, registration is free of charge.
How do I sign up?
To create your account, click on the "Login" button at the top of the page, then select the link "register" below the login form.
Can I modify my account?
You can personalise and modify your account by going to the "My profile" page, which can be opened via the drop-down menu after logging in.
It is important to personalise your profile by adding a photo, your interests, contact details and your social network accounts.
How do I delete my account?
To delete your account, go to the "My preferences" page, which can be opened via the drop-down menu after logging in.
Can anyone join the community?
How does the community work?
Each theme makes up a community and provides you with a discussion forum in which you can freely chat with other enthusiasts who are passionate about your favourite subjects.
You can use Solerni to develop your network by joining a community of members to share your knowledge, discuss and debate issues, ask and answer questions, and even put together collaborative projects to build your skills.
The most active members who make the most appreciated contributions may be awarded the status of ‘power learner’, allowing them to build up their reputation within the network and moderate discussions in public forums.
You can occasionally take part in MOOCs to obtain certificates or badges, and learn together by taking part in collaborative activities.
What is a collaborative MOOC?
MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course.
MOOCs on our Solerni platform are collaborative as we champion social learning, that is "peer learning", rather than direct unilateral learning.
In addition to traditional courses which can be read or viewed via video, our MOOCs propose:
• community functions which encourage interaction (forum),
• content creation tools which encourage participant production (wiki, blog, resource sharing spaces...),
• material which encourages activity and learner independence.
On Solerni, you won’t feel bored and alone. Instead, you will take part in a collaborative MOOC that is unique, fun and motivating!
I want to join a MOOC
Who can join a MOOC?
Anyone can join a MOOC: MOOCs are open to everybody! You just need to register.
Do I have to pay for the courses?
MOOCs on the Solerni platform are free.
What equipment do I need?
To join a MOOC you will need a computer or a tablet and Internet access. You can use your smartphone but this device is not optimized for now.
What browsers are supported by the platform?
To access Solerni, you should use the most recent version of your browser. The minimum versions required are:
• Google Chrome : version 30.0
• Mozilla Firefox : version 25.0
• Apple Safari : version 6
• Microsoft Internet Explorer: version 9 (version 10 to be able to drag-and-drop content from outside the browser in Solerni)
How do I register for a MOOC?
First sign up to the Solerni platform to create an account. Registration is free: you can become a member of Solerni's various thematic communities and join all of the MOOCs on offer.
Is there a deadline for joining a MOOC?
Our Collaborative MOOCs are time-limited as they are run by an educational team to make it easier to learn in a network. Or MOOCs therefore have and start and end date and a registration deadline, which are all indicated in the MOOC's description.
Each MOOC's educational team decides on its registration period in order to make sure that everyone has enough time to take part in the suggested activities and evaluations when they are offered.
If registration is closed, that means the MOOC is too far along for you to join it in the best conditions and/or the first evaluations have already been completed.
I missed the registration deadline. Will there be another session?
This depends on the MOOC. In order to receive a notification, navigate to the MOOC's description page and click on the link "Receive a notification for the next session". You will then be informed by e-mail when a new session has been scheduled.
How exactly does a MOOC work?
How long does a MOOC last?
The duration is specific to each MOOC. To find out more, read the description for your course.
Are there any prerequisites?
Every course is different. Some have prerequisites, others not. Check the specific prerequisites for your course on the description page. If you do not meet all of them, you can still follow the course.
How much time should I dedicate each week?
The weekly working time depends on each MOOC. Generally it is between 2 and 5 hours each week. To find out more, read the description for your course.
Are there timetables?
There are no course timetables! It’s a MOOC! You are free to log in to your course at any time, as the videos, online course and exercises are always available.
However, the news bulletins are live and constitute weekly sessions to chat live in the forums and on Twitter. If you can't take part, you can watch these news bulletins again later.
How are the courses organised?
The courses are divided into sequences.
Each week you will start a new sequence which is made up of subjects and activities, during which you will have the opportunity.
to learn, through courses provided by teachers (reading, video, audio, external ressources, websites…)
• to communicate on the forums, with other learners and with teachers
• to share resources that you have created for the MOOC activities
• to do activities alone or with other learners to put into practice what you have learned
• to test yourself with quizzes
• to gain badges proving your skills
Do I have to follow the MOOC in chronological order?
No, you can do the MOOC in whatever order you like, but you may lose out on part of the community effect with its scheduled sessions.
Do I have to follow the MOOC from start to finish?
No, you can take all or part of a MOOC according to how much time you have and your needs. However, if you want a document proving you followed the course or a certificate for the MOOCs that provide them, you must complete all of the evaluations required to obtain the attestation or certificate.
How can I track my progress and see how much of the MOOC is left?
To track your progress in the MOOC you have 2 tools:
• A progress bar that shows the part you have already completed as a %: the bar can be seen on your dashboard and the MOOC home page.
• A detailed table showing your progress that displays all the activities you must carry out and the status for each one.
1/ To advance your progress bar you must:
• validate each page of content by clicking on the button "I have finished" at the bottom of each of the MOOC's screens, before moving on to the next topic or activity.
• complete the activities recommended by the instructors (quiz, test, survey, reply in a forum, comment on content...)
• By clicking on the button "I have finished" you confirm that you have carried out the required task (reading, watching a video, activity, quiz...)
2/ To receive the details of the remaining activities and check what is left for you to do, you must:
• click on the "My progress" tab in the top navigation bar of the MOOC
Is my progress linked to obtaining badges?
No, the tools measure your progress in the MOOC and not your level of achievement, which is measured by obtaining knowledge and / or skills badges proposed by the MOOC.
So, it is possible to successfully obtain all the badges proposed and have a progress bar of less than 100% if you have not validated all the content and activities contained in the MOOC.
Conversely, your progress bar can be at 100% if you have validated all the content and activities in the MOOC, without necessarily having obtained all the badges if your scores are below the minimum required to obtain the certifications.
Can I download the MOOC resources?
This depends on the MOOC. Some resources are made available to learners in the MOOC's "Resources" section.
I need help during the course
Are you have difficulty understanding a course or completing a task? Use the learner and teacher network to help you by discussing it directly on the forum, because "Learning, it's always better together"!
The MOOC is finished. Can I still access it?
If you were signed up for the course, you can still access it from your dashboard by clicking on "Access archives".
You will no longer be able to chat with the MOOCers or carry out the activities but you can access the content.
Badges, evaluation, attestation: how does it work?
What is a badge?
A badge is digital proof that you receive each time you complete a course evaluation.
On Solerni we offer 2 types of badge:
• knowledge badges that prove you successfully passed a quiz
• skills badges that prove you were peer evaluated
What is peer evaluation?
Skill badges are awarded by the community. This is what we call peer evaluation. If you wish to validate a skill, you must present several pieces of work in an "evidence file", which will be evaluated by three people who wish to validate the same skill. Evaluation is in accordance with precise criteria. Every person who wants to validate a skill agrees to peer evaluation.
Is a certificate of achievement awarded at the end of a MOOC?
This depends on the MOOC. For certain courses, learners who achieve all of the badges will be awarded a certificate for successfully completing the MOOC.
How can I find my MOOCs and my badges?
You can find your MOOCs and badges you have achieved via your dashboard.
How does my dashboard work?
Each theme has its own dashboard.
Once you have logged in to your account, you will automatically access your dashboard.
You can always access it either by clicking on the theme's title or by selecting "my dashboard" in the drop-down login menu.
• shows you the MOOCs you have joined
• shows you the badges you have achieved for the thematic platform
• provides access to the theme's MOOC catalogue
• provides access to the thematic social network's discussion area
• provides access to your resource library.
I have encountered a problem
I cannot log in
Are your password or e-mail address not recognised?
Click on Forgotten Password to reset your password and log in again.
Please check that your browser settings ensure that you have the most recent version of your browser, then try to log in again.
If you cannot gain access, create a new account by using a different e-mail address.
I have not received a Solerni e-mail
Check that the e-mails have not gone into your "Spam" folder. If this is the case, add the "email@example.com" e-mail address to trusted e-mails.
I have display problems
Check your browser settings. We recommend that you download the most recent version of your browser.
I can no longer find all my past MOOC data
If you are among the first members registered on our old platform solerni.org, it is quite normal that you cannot find all the data concerning MOOCs you have completed on solerni.org.
Your initial account has been partially migrated to solerni.com so that you can find all the MOOCs that you worked on and the badges you obtained on solerni.org in your new dashboard.
However, the migration does not enable you to find all the content you generated (messages posted on forums, internal emails, quiz results) when following previous MOOCs. If you wish to find all your archives, you can still log on to our old platform solerni.org to consult your complete archives.
